Sexual Assault Facts & Statistics

Thalia Vaillancourt has been working in the service field since 1999 when she provided experiential education to inner city youth as a Wilderness Expedition Canoeing Guide. After a 15-year career in the wellness field with athletes, the Montreal stunt team, people with chronic pain, anxiety, and depression, and goal coaching, she changed direction. With lived experience with houselessness, and as a domestic and sexual violence survivor, she has been an activist and advocate since 2018. She worked as a housing case worker for a Thurston County domestic and sexual violence agency before becoming a trainer. She provided a dual domestic and sexual violence advocate training for the Office of Crime Victims Advocacy while working with agency leaders to lower barriers to services and prevent harm caused by systems of violence until fall 2023. She now works as Centralia College’s Director of Equity and Inclusion and chairs the board for Partners in Prevention Education. Thalia holds a Master of Public Administration from The Evergreen State College.

Intersections of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Human Trafficking with a Latinx Lens

Presented by Esmeralda Triplet, Statewide Coordinating Body Program Manager at Innovations Human Trafficking Collaborative

Innovations HTC is an Indigenous survivor-led social justice non-profit based in Olympia, WA. IHTC is action-focused and is the only Human Trafficking agency in the South Sound. Esmeralda works throughout Washington State to ensure coordination and support is occurring for statewide healing, support, and transition services to survivors of sex trafficking. Esmeralda is first generation born and bilingual in Spanish. She is a survivor of sexual and domestic violence and comes with eight years of social work experience. Her career started as a direct service staff helping survivors through the legal system and creating partnerships for undocumented survivors of violence. Esmeralda comes with years of experience and knowledge from both lived and professional certifications and education. Some of this includes Mental Health First-Aid, Suicide QPR Certification, and Credentialed in National Victim Advocacy. Esmeralda has experience in managing and directing multiple programs with audit preparation, grant writing and training experience. Esmeralda has offered consulting services to other non-profits to support in strategic planning and programming. Her work includes the creation and implementation of law enforcement training for the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission. Esmeralda successfully applied for the first Thurston County grant that will support high risk victims with wrap-around services with the goal of reducing homicide rates for the county. She serves as co-chair for Thurston County’s Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Taskforce in partnership with the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. Esmeralda’s knowledge of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, helps close the gaps and barriers for Human Trafficking Survivors. Her work will help educate the community in the intersections survivors face and will help promote healing, support, and transition services.

Understanding Title IX Basics

Joy Anglesey has many years of experience working in a trauma-informed manner in Human Resources and Equity. She worked for several years for a domestic violence and sexual assault organization in Olympia, and understands the severe nature of primary, and secondary or vicarious trauma to individuals. Joy now works for Centralia College, where one of her primary duties is as the Title IX Officer for the campus. She brings compassion and empathy to this role, as she approaches the topic in a trauma-informed way. She has been certified as a Title IX Investigator and has undergone 20 plus hours of Title IX training in the past 12 months.
